Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in East Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, to Afeni Shakur (January 10, 1947 – May 2, 2016) and Billy Garland (born March 14, 1949).

By this point in time, Davis was incarcerated at Nevada's High Desert State Prison serving a 16 to 40-month prison sentence for a separate jailhouse fight-related conviction he received in April 2025. On August 31, one week shy of the 30th anniversary of the shooting, the jury, after nearly three hours of deliberations, convicted Davis of first-degree murder.
