Early life
Mulaney was born on August 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois. Both of his parents are lawyers. His mother, Ellen Mulaney (née Stanton), is a professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, and his father, Charles "Chip" Mulaney Jr., is a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom who had previously clerked for Federal Judge Edward Weinfeld (1901–1988). His parents are both of Irish Catholic heritage.

In October 2025, Mulaney partnered with Years, a non-alcoholic beer brand from Chicago. He appeared in multiple comedic ads for the brand, ultimately becoming its spokesperson.
